Ayondela McDole, a PhD candidate in Cultural Studies at George Mason University, discussed Mammy as Myth: The Truth Behind the Mammy Stereotype in American History, and led a discussion on the evolution of this stereotype. One hundred and fifty years after slavery’s formal end, the "mammy" maintains an important role in American culture as a myth designed to suppress women of color.
